Zip1K™ Product Description

The Gedanken Zip1K product is a family of SCSI connected mass storage products for the Hewlett-Packard HP1000 computer systems. Each member of the Zip1K family combines a high-performance fixed disc and a removable cartridge drive in a compact enclosure. All the software drivers and utilities needed to make maximum use of the drives are included, as is system generation information.

The fixed disc in the Zip1K is a state of the art mechanism featuring high capacity, low access times , high transfer rates, and cached read look ahead. The abundant storage (4.5 to 9.1 gigabytes) in the Zip1K eliminates storage management headaches in almost any RTE environment.

The Zip1K removable discs offer 100 megabytes of removable storage in a shirt pocket size cartridge which is physically compatible with the Iomega ZIP® drives. The compact and low cost Zip1K cartridges are ideal for use as a transport media, a back up media, or even as a bootable system media.

ZIP cartridges are uniquely well suited to be a transport media. With over 100 million Iomega ZIP drives installed, the ZIP cartridge has become the most widely accepted high capacity removable disc storage format in the marketplace. To further enhance the utility of the ZIP1K as a transport media, Gedanken has written the "RTE Explorer" program which offers easy point-and-click access to RTE files on a Zip1K cartridge mounted in a Windows NT or Windows 95/98 system.

Because the media is removable, Zip1K cartridges are ideal for keeping sensitive or classified data that must be secured when it is not in active use. Simply pop the cartridge and lock it in a safe.

The Zip1K cartridges are formatted to the native RTE format, so they can be used as system or auxiliary discs for the in the CI or FMGR file systems. Given RTE's modest storage requirements, the 100MB Zip1K cartridge makes a very attractive backup media. Each 100 MB cartridge can hold as much data as five 2400' 1600BPI 9-track magnetic tapes. More convenient than DDS for file retrieval, there is no need for special tape backup software such as FST or TF. Simply copy your files to the ZIP disc using the CO command in CI to create instantly available backups. Because the files on the ZIP cartridge are standard RTE files, you can use the LI command to examine the files, the SCOM utility to compare revisions, or anything else you would be able to do to ordinary files. This is in contrast to FST archives to tape, which require that the files be restored to the system before they can be examined. The Zip1K cartridge is a compact storage media. Although DDS is even more compact, any of the thousands of files in a Zip1K cartridge can be accessed in less than 60 seconds, including selection and mounting.

Zip1K removable cartridges can contain one or more bootable RTE-A system images, which makes them ideal for booting memory resident systems. Although the ZIP1K cartridge can be configured to hold a Memory Based or Disc Based RTE-A operating system, Gedanken recommends that it be used for Memory Based systems only, as the ZIP drives are not designed as a 100% duty cycle hard disc replacement. The drive automatically enters a low power sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity.
