Zip1K™ Frequently Asked Questions.

Here are a few frequently asked questions about our Zip1K line.

Q. What is a Zip1K?

The Zip1K is a SCSI hard disk drive for the HP1000 A-series computer. Gedanken also sells disk drives for HP1000 RTE-6 systems, called ReMACs.

The Zip1K comes standard with a 100 MB ZIP removable media drive and 4GB hard drive, and has options for a magneto-optic CD-ROM drive and DDS tape drive. Larger capacity hard disk and ZIP drives are available.

The Zip1K drive comes in two configurations, the model T and the model R.

The model T is a tabletop enclosure suitable for office and computer room environments (10-40 C with 10-90% RH). The enclosure for the standard configuration model T is 7" W by 6.5" H by 14" D.

The model R is a 19" rack-mount enclosure suitable for industrial and computer room environments. (5-50 C with 10-90% RH). The rack mount drives are 17.25" W by 17.5" L by 1.75" H (1U). (The rack mount ears add 1.75" to the width to make the requisite 19")

Q. How much does it cost?

Please contact Gedanken sales@gedanken.com for pricing and availability. Discounts are available for distributors and volume end users.

Q. Does HP support the Zip1K?

HP no longer tests or supports any peripherals for the HP1000. HP has outsourced this to third parties such as Gedanken. Gedanken is approved as a third party vendor for HP1000 peripherals, and we do system and integration testing for HP. HP will still support your HP1000 with Gedanken peripherals on it.

Q. What kind of warranty and support do you offer?

We offer a 2 year warranty, and have committed to support the Zip1K until 2005. We offer two support options.

The first support option is a return to factory option, with a 3 day turn around (plus shipping and customs delays). The second support option is an exchange option under which we would ship you a refurbished drive the same day (upon request), and you would ship the defective drive back to the factory after you receive the replacement drive.

Q. How do you install the drive?

If you already have a SCSI drive in your system, the Zip1K can be a drop-in replacement.

If you don't have a SCSI I/O card, or you want to add the Zip1K as an additional drive to take advantage of its features, you will need to re-generate your system with the additional LUs. Gedanken provides a pamphlet with the drive explaining how to do this. We also can do the installation for you.

The Zip1K requires version 6.0 or later of RTE-A. Boot from a Zip1K requires VCP firmware revision 4025 or later, and SCSI card firmware revision 921030 or higher. All other software required to use the Zip1K drive is included.

Q. What is the Zip drive for?

The Zip part of the Zip1K is an IOMEGA Zip drive which uses standard Zip cartridges, available worldwide. Gedanken sells ZIP disks preformatted with the HP1000 file system. With 100MB capacity per disk cartridge, the Zip disk cartridge is an ideal high capacity media to use for extra storage, backup, sensitive data, or transport.

Gedanken offers an RTE Explorer product, which allows a PC drag-and-drop access to the RTE file system on the Zip cartridge. Gedanken also offers HP1000 software on the Zip media, including backup utilities, HP software, and our system and programmer's toolkits.
